Year 3 and 4 Autumn Term 2023 A Very warm welcome to the class of Year 3 and 4. The class teacher is Miss Elan Jones and throughout this term we will be focusing on “Food” as our main theme. Here is a brief description of what we will be studying in each of the areas of learning and experience: Languages, Literacy and Communication: As a part of our class routine, we will be completing our work through the medium of Welsh for two weeks and then through the medium of English for another two weeks. We will discuss, read and learn how to write a report, speech, instructions, poster, rules, invitation and so on. Our book for this term will be ‘The Polecat Cafe’ by Roald Dahl and we will be reading the book in Welsh and English depending on what week corresponds. Additionally, we will have “Read, Write, Inc” sessions each morning in order to develop and improve the learner’s English spelling skills. Mathematics and Numeracy: The main units we will be concentrating on this half term will be adding and subtracting, place value, temperature, data work, estimation, mathematic reasoning and developing mental maths skills. We will then move on to develop different skills after the half term. Science and Technology: Throughout the term we will have the opportunity to: experiment and discover what drinks are unhealthy for the body; make homemade soup using the garden vegetables; and discover how a potato can produce an electrical current. The Humanities: We will be looking at various traditional foods from different countries and how the food industry has changed over the years. We will also concentrate on celebrations such as Christmas, Diwali, Guy Fawlkes night and Owain Glyndwr. Health and Well-being: Every Tuesday, we will have our physical education lesson where we will focus on practising and developing netball skills for the first half of the term. Throughout the rest of the term, we will concentrate on developing gymnastics skills. Additionally, the learners will also get a chance to complete the “milltir fawr – the big mile” twice a week to ensure that we improve our physical and mental health. In addition to keeping ourselves fit and healthy, there will be a strong emphasis on how to have a good relationship with your mental health. We will discuss issues such as anxiety, bullying and celebrate how we are all different in our own way. At the root of our health and well-being lessons, we will learn about the connection between a healthy body and a healthy mind. Expressive Arts: Here, we will be studying the work and techniques of Andy Warhol who often uses food as inspiration. Drama skills will be a natural part of our classroom through their oral and performance work. We are also very lucky to have music workshop sessions that will teach the children to play new instruments. Digital Competence: Digital competence is a very powerful skill to develop towards the future and I will be ensuring that the learners will get plenty of experience to research independently and develop basic computer skills. Additionally, we will be developing our coding skills in diverse ways. Homework: The children will receive mathematics homework every two weeks and in between, they will receive homework based on our theme of “celebrations”. The homework will be set each Friday and is also expected to be completed by the following Friday. We look forward to having a busy and fun time with the children and thank you very much for your support.
